Maybe he's just
another kid with a knack for basslines but XL seem to have other ideas.
Long after the media feeding frenzy for the Garage underground has
packed up and gone home (noticed any More Fire Crew features in your
rock weekly lately?) the sound is still getting pushed into new shapes.
Dizzee Rascal first released this underground classic almost a year
ago and his sound has moved on - 'I Luv U' is where it started.
Machine fed
bass and beats kick around this track like a dog trapped in a cage.
There's no concession to anyone's taste, just the sounds of Dizzee's
head buzzing with troubles and strife. And it's dark in there: "I
ain't UK Garage so get used to it / I was raised an only child /
Not a brother not a sis / I was raised around hate / Not a hug not
a kiss."
With plaudits
already flying in from everyone from Mike Skinner to cultural studies
mainbrain Simon Reynolds ("this 17 year old might be the most
impressive and provocative English MC since Tricky") the stage
is set for an exciting debut album.
